Engraving
Why do the Ancol collars get a tag rather than engraved leather?
Those collars are Ancol's, not ours, and we don't put other people's leather through the laser. The name goes on a round tag on the ring instead, and that tag outlasts the strap it hangs on.
Engraving into the hide itself is reserved for the REGO Signature — our own leather, where we control every part of it. That's the collar this was all started for.
What are the tags made of?
They're round, aluminium, with a hard black anodised surface. Anodising is an electrochemical finish rather than a paint, so it's part of the metal and won't flake off. Aluminium doesn't rust, and they're light enough that a small dog barely notices one.
How long does the engraving last?
Indefinitely, on both. On the Signature the laser removes a thin layer of the hide rather than adding anything on top, and the mark darkens gently as the leather ages. On a tag it cuts through the black anodised layer to bright aluminium underneath, so the lettering is a change in the metal itself.
How many characters fit on a tag?
Up to 12 including spaces. Shorter names sit larger. A round tag has less room across its face than a strap does, so if you're near the limit, message us before ordering and we'll tell you honestly how it'll look.
Can I buy a tag on its own?
No. Tags come fitted to a collar we've supplied, at £3 added to any collar in the range. We don't sell them separately.
Will the tag jingle?
Less than a steel one, because aluminium is lighter. If your dog already wears other tags they'll knock together — a silicone tag silencer sorts that out if it bothers you.
Should I put my dog's name on it?
Most people do, and it's what we're set up for. Worth knowing the trade-off though: some owners avoid it on the basis that a stranger who can call the dog by name looks like they own it.
Separately, under the Control of Dogs Order 1992 a dog in a public place must wear a collar carrying the owner's name and address, either on the collar or on a tag attached to it. A first name alone doesn't meet that, so treat our tag as an addition to a proper ID tag rather than a replacement — or engrave your surname instead.
Collars, sizing & care
What collars do you stock?
Ancol's Timberwolf range in tan, sable and blue. It comes in size 2 (26–31 cm), size 3 (28–36 cm), size 4 (35–43 cm) and size 5 (39–48 cm). It's top-grain bridle leather, hand-crafted in the UK and sewn down both sides with bonded thread — what Reggie wears.
How do I measure my dog's neck?
Use a soft tape measure around the base of the neck where the collar sits, then add roughly two fingers' width for comfort. If you fall between two sizes, take the larger one. The full chart is at the bottom of the collars page.
Can the collar and tag get wet?
The tag is fine — aluminium doesn't rust. The leather is a different matter. Ancol note that leather is a natural, porous product and some colour run from the natural dye can happen when it gets wet, so it shouldn't be soaked. If it does become saturated, let it air dry on its own — never use heat to speed it up.
How do I look after it?
Rinse the tag under a tap when it gets muddy and it'll come up clean. For the collar, wipe it down and treat it with a leather conditioner about once a year, which is what Ancol recommend. Avoid soaking the leather and avoid drying it near a radiator.
Ordering
When can I order?
Not yet. We're finishing engraving tests on the first batch of tags. Join the waitlist and you'll get one email the day ordering opens — not a newsletter.
How quickly do you reply?
Within 48 hours, every time. If we're going to be slower than that for any reason, this site will say so.
Can I return a personalised tag?
Personalised goods are excluded from the usual 14-day right to cancel under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, because we can't resell a tag with someone else's dog's name on it. A plain collar with no tag can be returned as normal.
Your rights are unaffected if something arrives faulty, damaged or not as described — those sit under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. And if we've made a mistake with the engraving, we'll put it right, no argument.
Where do you post to?
UK addresses to begin with. We'll look at posting further afield once we've got the first orders out of the door properly.
What is the REGO Signature collar?
Our own collar, made from our own leather with the name engraved straight into the strap rather than carrying a tag, starting from £30. It's the collar the whole business was started to make. It isn't ready yet and has no firm launch date — we'd rather get it right than rush it. Waitlist members hear about it first.
Who is Reggie?
Our terrier, and the reason the brand exists. He wears every new tag before anyone else does. If it doesn't survive him, it doesn't go on sale.
